Victorian trade cards, coated stock cards, chair tickets, including the very appreciated Liebig
are spotlighted in this book. Its purpose has been to collect, illustrate and comment numerous informations about those fleeting witnesses of the past, before they fall into oblivion. Special attention is given to the illustrators: 128 drawers who participated in the production of trade cards are listed; trade brands and/or editors that called upon them are indicated opposite their names. In each case, an example of drawing is shown and, for most of them, a model of signature – or one of the artist’s signatures. Collectors will also find listings of trade cards catalogues, especially the precious WELD, acrostic designating the authors: Wharton-Tigar Edward and Lucilla de Magistris.

“Objects of curiosity and sometimes of passion, Victorian trade cards are neither insignificant nor trivial.
Sometimes very beautiful, sometimes comical or funny, they rightly represent the day-to-day life of the time, daily events, the evolution of people’s mentality.
They are certainly transient like thousands of other documents, like the life of a butterfly or even that of man placed in the frame of time.
Transient, as this book will be, it is dedicated to all those who are close to me and to the readers to whom I wish to communicate some of the joy and the emotion that I felt when I held these small items of the past in my hands, items that help relive an earlier period and witness a know-how and a culture of bygone days.” |
